Wow, thanks for all of the love. In the last two days, the Seinfeldian Chain has seen

We’re pretty stoked that you like the site, and are simultaneously relieved that the Mac Mini is still going strong. But most of all, we’re motivated to make this site RAWK.

Today we visited the country for a 16-mile walk in the Chilterns. On the train ride out of London, we brainstormed some ideas to make the chain even more useful:

  • * Something that says the number of days the chain has been active
  • Tags
  • * Print-friendly calendars
  • * Navigation to previous months
  • * Forum
  • Option to set a goal date
  • * RSS feed and email reminders to do the task and update the chain
  • * iGoogle chain widget
  • Read only chains for sharing with friends

The starred items are ones we thought should take priority. As you can see, we have a hard time making choices. What do you want us to add? Leave a comment below. We also want to build up the rest of the site as quickly as possible, so that the food diary and run log become a more integrated food and exercise diary.

Stay tuned for good changes. And thanks for visiting!

    I’d like to be able to add new chains to the single page. Something where I could initially start with one or two chains, but then add more later and remove others, and have them all viewable on a single page. Maybe even have different sized chains, so that newer ones were front and center, while older chains were still usable, but smaller and to the side.

    Also, being able to set the timezone. :)

    multiple chains (with different titles) on a single page.

    This would be a great iGoogle widget ! I would have it front and center on my iGoogle page :)

    And at some point, it would be cool to be able to change the mark-out graphic from the default red X. Examples, a pair of shoes for an exercise related chain. a book for a learning related chain, a duster for a house-cleaning related chain, etc.

    p.s. A really big thank you for this service!

    Hi, I have been using this application of yours to kick my arse into running every day. It’s awesome.

    I have a suggestion: Some sort of account with multiple chains added to it, and an interface so you can update your chain with Twitter.

    The geek in me also wants to see an API and an XML feed that describes the entire chain, so interesting things could be done with Yahoo pipes, or to write firefox extensions or something.

    I can’t believe I was going to program this myself after I saw the article on lifehacker :)

    @everybody,

    Thanks for all the wonderful feedback.

    It is really cool and fun to see our little site get a bit of attention and to see people using and enjoying my software.

    I hacked up the chain app in a day using Ruby on Rails and tomorrow I’m going to spend another day seeing what more I can add to it. I’ll post at the end of tomorrow letting you know how it all goes and hopefully I’ll be releasing a couple of new features.

    First on the list will be timezone support because that’s just broken right now, everything is set to UK time… not so great for you NZers ahead of us and Americans behind us.

    Good night for now and cheers for the exciting weekend!

    -Tim

    @Just Doing It,

    thank you for all the comments. It is encouraging to have someone that really likes the software and who wants to see it grow.

    @Steve,

    please to hear we’ve been kicking your arse and you’ve been enjoying it, we aim to please. Great ideas about feeds and APIs. I think the first feed we’ll put in is a reminder feed so that rather than just consuming a bunch of distraction through your reader you can consume something that prompts you to go and get something done.

    What would you use an API for if we build one? I’ve been wanting to learn to put together a REST API.

  10. Steve Says:

    Tim,

    I was thinking something along the lines of a firefox extension. Also, for a while, I have been meaning to write a sort of “dashboard” start page that shows me all my rss feeds, messages in my various inboxes, missed IMs, a timekeeping chart and so on. I’d use the API to stick a smaller version of the chains on there.

    Also, you could use the API to build twitter integration, which would definitely be useful.

    I’ll probably program this when this current job I’m on ends.

    I’d like to share my chain, but since other people can make changes to it, that would be bad.

  12. Just Doing It Says:

    If you were to go the Firefox extension route, it would be really cool to have a bar (down near the status bar) that visually showed you the chain, and maybe rotated through multiple chains. (Something like a stock ticker, only with individual chains and chain progress)

    @Tim - One of my current chains is learning a little bit about Ruby and Rails everyday. :) Any chance you’ll put this app in a subversion directory and let all of us RubyNewbies study it?

  13. Tim Says:

    All,

    I’ve added time zone support. Had a slow day today, this wasn’t too ambitious and I still managed to break the site for 5 minutes.

    @Just Doing It, I really like the idea of opening up the chains application to others because it isn’t really our prime focus and everybody is having such great ideas around it. We’re taking off for a few weeks on holiday this Saturday and we’ll have an answer for you when we’re back from France (cycling) and Scotland (walking).

    @kangmi, good point, well taken. I’ll add that to the list.

    @Tim and the rest of the SmarterFitter gang - I’m jealous! Have lots of fun for all of us and may you enjoy many glorious life changing adventures! http://www.tudy.ro/2007/07/10/the-bistromathic-drive/#comment-25415
