Diet blog reports that Quiznos has released calorie information for its extensive menu of “Toasty” sub sandwiches. Unsurprisingly, their sarnies pack a mean calorie punch. Take the large veggie sub, for example: it totals 1220 Calories (including 72 grams of fat).

This reminds me of my once beloved Jimmy John’s. The very name brings back fond college memories of late night sandiwch runs. I always went for the #6 (their vegetarian 8″ sub) with easy cheese, easy mayo, extra veggies, vinegar and oregano.

Many number sixes later I found nutrition information for Jimmy John’s menu on their website and was a little dismayed by what I read. Of their seven 8″ subs, the #6 vegetarian is highest in fat (36.22 grams) and second highest in calories (640 Calories). Here’s the kicker: getting rid of the mayo removes 230 calories and 25 grams of fat. That’s about 4 Tbsp of mayonnaise! Is this really necessary?

Unfortunately for vegetarians, mayo and cheese provide the “meat” of most store-bought/fast-food sandwiches. Take away those critical items and you’re pretty much left with a couple slices of bread and maybe a wilted piece of lettuce.
