Thanks again to Crabby McSlacker for sharing my post, 5 Reasons to Quit the Gym, on the highly addictive Cranky Fitness blogskitched-20080405-055024.jpg. The reader responses have not only been wonderful, but have also demonstrated that there are loads of compelling reasons to keep a gym membership.

I go for classes and the pool, and actually just got hired as a substitute pilates teacher (yay!). I agree, the machines are, well, boring. (We’re lucky, we live in a nice climate, right off of a trail that goes around the San Francisco Bay, and there’s really no reason NOT to walk outside!)

1. Hot tub.

2. Child care. As a single parent to a 5 year old, I can’t just throw on my shoes and run out the door. I need someone to watch over my daughter.

I joined to get a yoga class at a time and place that wasn’t impossible to get to, but there were all those extras. The monthly cost was about what I’d been paying for yoga classes five years ago in NC, but that wasn’t all I was getting for the money. That’s when I started doing weights, and I really enjoyed it, and since I have an awful time forcing myself out into the cold to walk, I loved the elliptical ( and so did my knees and my hips!)

I love my gym - it’s the highlight of my day. Everything on your list of pros for the gym applies to me. But you forgot a big one - Childcare!!

I go when the weather just doesn’t work for me to run outside. I don’t like running on the treadmill but it beats running in the rain at temperatures below 40° or when the temp drops below about 12° or when I need to run on a summer afternoon and the temperature is above 80° (I have a fairly low tolerance for heat).

My fitness center is like a cruise ship. There’s so much to do and so much going on, and the scenery changes just enough to keep one interested :-)

Elsewhere on the web, Alyssa Schwartz of Best Health Magazine’s weblog says:

I found a strength-training class that I’m actually willing to go to twice a week – no small accomplishment. Going to the gym for that class alone makes my cost per visit higher than if I did all my workouts there (sadly my gym doesn’t have a per-visit plan), it’s the only way I’m willing to do weights, and that is worth the steep monthly fee.
