Breakfast Smoothie: 1/2 pear, 1/2 nectarine, 1/4 avocado, 1cm piece of ginger, 1 date, ice and water. This was delicious but not substantial enough.
Lunch: Broiled salmon with cucumber, red onion and parsley “salsa” dressed with lemon and tahini, garnished with pine nuts and pomegranate. This was good but I think a firm white fish would do better in this context. This meal also made me miss tomatoes.
Dinner: Chipotle bean soup with lime-pickled onions, swiss chard and avocado, adapted from this recipe. My adaptations: I used some pinto-like beans I brought back from spain and cooked it by whizzing all of the ingredients in the Vitamix on high for 7 minutes, making this a VERY easy soup to make. And it was tasty; kind of like bean dip in soup form. But I might have gone overboard on the garnishes. Read on…
As I’ve mentioned, the Clean detox programme calls for two liquid and one solid meals per day, with the liquid meals ideally timed for lunch and dinner. On days 1 and 2 I saved my solid meal for dinner, but on Day 3 I decided to go for optimal and made a chipotle beans soup based on this recipe: Chipotle black bean soup with lime-pickled onions. The soup was great, and I couldn’t resist adding a few garnishes… it started with the lime-pickled onions, then extended to avocado… and then I added a pile of steamed chard which I think turned this from a pureed soup into more of a stew. I also had a few romaine leaves and dipped them in the soup as if they were corn chips (as if).
I don’t know if these “solid” soup injections constitute cheating or not, but it was good and made it a far more pleasurable and varied meal.
Two other notes of interest:
- This morning I had my first Primal Fitness workout since starting the Clean Detox. It was tough but not impossible. However, I struggled a LOT with hunger yesterday and I think I definitely need to beef up (not literally) my morning smoothie. I’m open to any and all suggestions for injecting more protein into my diet without resorting to protein powders or supplements.
- I’m sleeping very well at the moment – a solid 8 hours per night. I think this is a combination of eating well, particularly at night, and exercise. It feels good, but I’m not exactly a powerhouse of productivity during the day… I feel very unfocused lately and tend to crash at about 3 or 4pm, which might be caffeine withdrawal.

Hi Monica. Great sounding detox you’ve shaped for yourself. Might I suggest some silken tofu (mori-by, in ambient section of supermarket, with the dried onions usually)? If you aren’t having protein first thing in the morning while doing a detox, you will always be hungry quickly, and thinking about food. Are you able to have nuts on this? They are massively filling and would whizz down nicely in the vitamix. Good luck with your efforts!

I’ve done silken tofu smoothies! (See banana and chocolate tofu smoothie.) BUT this detox is a no-soy thing. Basically all sorts of foods that are known trigger allergies are off the table: soy, dairy, eggs, strawberries, banana and sadly tomatoes and eggplant, too! Though given that, it’s interesting that nuts are ok. So yes, nuts in my smoothie are a definite go and I think I shall make nut milk, too. Off to soak some cashews!

Stupid Kindle. That should be Mori-nu for the tofu. Or using a similar tofu product/brand that’s soft.

Nut milk would have been my suggestion either almond or cashew, I am in a cashew nut milk phase at the moment, I love it. Are you allowed to have oats? You could soak them overnight in nut milk then whiz with whatever fruit you fancy.
Monica says
Marie, I am at this very moment soaking cashews for cashew milk. 🙂 What else do you do with your cashew milk? I’m going to put some in a cucumber soup, too. Oats are off limits as most oats are rolled in the same vicinity as gluten products. Not that I need to be that strict about it, but I will be – I’m enjoying the challenge!

I went through a phase of making this almond porridge and I used the cashew milk or almond milk. It’s not a liquid meal though so probably isn’t any good for your detox. It does taste better than it looks, my picture doesn’t do it justice either! Sometimes I just drink the milk which is something I have never done with dairy milk which I really don’t like.

Marie! I see we’re both Bircher Muesli fans! (See: Bircher muesli defined and refined.) Your pick isn’t bad and I could see doing a similar “porridge” with other grains – maybe millet? I’m going to try the cashew milk today in a smoothie, and in cold cucumber soup. Watch this space!

Hi
You are doing amazingly well to work and detox at the same time, that’s why detox holidays are popular where you go to a peaceful place and get pampered with no need to work or cook.

This detox is pretty easy I think as far as detoxing goes. It’s not like a juice fast … and you’re encouraged to eat enough so as not to be hungry. I think part of this food detox is a work detox for me, too, I’ve long felt “out of the game” and I’m hoping these next few weeks of clean living and no hangovers means more focus and productivity. And hopefully the will to (mostly) carry it on after the three weeks are up …
