Remember when I used to live in Austin, Texas? Those were the days – sunshine, warmth, great Mexican food, and of course, Mexican Martini’s from Trudy’s. Life and my locale have moved on, but fortunately it’s possible to get great Tequila in Scotland (I recommend Cool Chile Co for mail-order tequila and mezcal in the UK) so I can recreate this sublime cocktail at home, which, according my friend Claudia, “You should open a cocktail bar based on this cocktail alone.” Trudy’s used to limit customers to ordering just two of these drinks per visit because they are HELLA strong (and so so drinkable). You’ve been warned!
Mexican Martini
Serves 1 generously
- Salt
- 2 ounces reposado tequila
- 1 ounce Cointreau
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- 3/4 ounce fresh orange juice
- 1/2 ounce olive brine
- 2 olives
Wet half the lip of a martini glass and dip it in salt. Chill the glass if you can. Pour the liquid ingredients into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain into the glass. Garnish with olives on a spear.
