What is Sinus Tarsi Syndrome?

March 6, 2008 · By Monica Shaw

The sinus tarsi is “the eye of the foot”, an opening on the outside of the foot between the ankle and heel bone. This canal contains ligaments which can become inflamed if put under undo stress such as high-impact running, jumping, or simply running with bad form. The pain associated with this is called “sinus tarsi syndrome”.

I know all this because I went to have my left ankle looked at by my GP who diagnosed me with sinus tarsi syndrome, apparently very common among sporty people (like me? hah!). Last night he injected some steroids into my sinus tarsal to calm down the inflammation. The procedure was painless, until he said “I’m very deep in the sinus cavity now”, at which point I became a little nauseous. I recovered quickly after a short rest on the couch and a large glass of red wine.

If all goes well I should be able to run again in 10 days time. Here’s to hoping…

I sprained my ankle on the tennis courts 3 months ago. Still suffer from ankle pain. Yesterday I visited a DPM who diagnosed me with sinus tarsi syndrome and recommended a cortisone injection. I opted not to have it. I’m wondering how you’re doing a year later . . . still having ankle problems? Thanks and hope you’re well.

    Hi Rene,

Sorry to hear about the ankle sprain. Injuries suck, no question about it. I’m still suffering from ankle pain, in fact, it’s gotten worse. So my guess is something else as play here. Mind you, I don’t think the cortisone injection did any harm to my ankle. But it didn’t help, unfortunately. Perhaps you should seek out a second opinion from another doctor? I hope you’re able to get to the bottom of your ankle pain. Injury and chronic pain is no fun.

    Best of luck to you,

    Monica

Thanks for your response Monica. Sorry to hear that you haven’t improved. I played tennis this morning with a friend who has ankle problems because of a sprain. She wears a supportive brace that keeps her ankle stable. I went online and ordered one from http://www.ankleshop.com/proddetail.asp?prod=2281X. I’m hoping that this will help. Looks like this site could benefit a lot of people. Thanks and take care. Rene

I received a cortisone shot in the Sinus Tarsi cavity today and it felt wonderful for about 5 hours and then bam….like being hit by a train; my ankle hurts sooo bad; I am icing it right now, but I had no indication or expectation of this incredible pain. I hope it goes away quickly!
